Whitby Golf Club off the coastal road to the pretty village of Sandsend

Whitby Golf Course is a fantastic holiday golf course with fantastic views of N Yorks Coast, run by PGA Professional offering expert tuition. The course is rarely too busy to be able to book a tee time.

There are wonderful views along the coast, north-westward over the picturesque bay of Sandsend to Kettleness, south-eastward over the harbour with the Abbey Ruins set in relief and inland over the rolling panorama of the North Yorks Moors.

It is the ideal type of holiday course, not too long or difficult for the moderate player provided a reasonable degree of accuracy is achieved.

“Wild hitters” can be severely punished, as some of the hazards are quite unusual. The most striking is the wild cleft in the Cliffs known as “Upgang Ravine” which has to be driven when playing the 6th and 18th holes

The degree of driving difficulty on many an occasion is decided by the prevailing wind which may come from either the North Sea or the moors.

I have a holiday cottage in Whitby and I absolutely love the place, but the one thing that I’ve noticed about the most prominent Whitby Information Guides on the Internet is (without trying to sound too derogatory for the sake of it) that they can to be quite clinical with the usual tourist information, and lacking character and fun.

My Mission statement to use the modern terminology is to inject into the new Whitby Guide exactly what you’re getting from this editorial directory you are reading at the moment, the human touch with real people and original articles, expressing emotions and feelings about the place and the events that take place each year.

The first project I want to undertake is to highlight the television programme Heartbeat, which Yorkshire television unfortunately recently announced that it would no longer be continuing, because of the cost cuts caused by the recession.

There was quite a large tidal wave of unhappiness in Whitby and Goathland village at the announcement a few months ago, because a lot of the businesses realised that for the last decade and a half this programme has been scheduled every year on prime time television usually 8 PM on a Sunday evening, obviously there could be no better advertising than that!

In fact there have been numerous petitions around the area to try and get Yorkshire TV to change their mind, but obviously this is extremely unlikely.

One thing I found quite amusing was only the other week I was in Whitby for the hundredth centenary of the swing bridge, and because my holiday cottage is almost booked out throughout the year, ironically I usually have to stay in other accommodation. So Pauline my partner and myself had booked rooms in the hotel next to Whitby Swing Bridge, so we got a good view of the event.
The following morning we went round the corner to a local cafeteria called the Grapevine, and I was bowled over by the amount of memorabilia all connected to Heartbeat in the cafe.
Literally one half of the cafeteria walls were covered in pictures from the programme, policeman’s helmet’s truncheons and all things connected. The owner of the cafeteria had a petition in the window saying it was extremely unfair of Yorkshire television because the area needed jobs from the tourism. This obviously is true but you cannot blame the television programme they are not responsible for keeping the area popular, it was a by-product of a very good program.

Anyway for our new Whitby guide, we are going currently contacting the management of some of the actors who appeared on the programme, with very positive results so far. I am asking the actors for personal interviews regarding their experiences in and around Whitby whilst filming.

Strangely enough Heartbeat is also filmed in Otley near to Leeds but because in the programme the fictitious Aidensfield (which is actually Goathland village) is supposed to be next to Whitby.
So poor Otley never gets any of the credit for its beautiful surrounding scenery. In fact knowing both areas quite well it’s quite funny to watch some scenes in the programme when say one of the policemen leaves the police station which is actually in Otley supposedly driving a couple of miles down to Whitby, and in the next scene is there in minutes ,he would actually have travelled 84 miles the distance from Otley to Whitby! The magic of television.

I have been lucky enough to appear in a number of episodes of Heartbeat myself as an extra, and can happily report that the crew on this particular program were a very friendly bunch.

Our second project on the programme and its connections with Whitby is to keep in touch with the various websites dedicated to Heartbeat and form a kind of portal between them so that when the fans of the programme arrange fun days out to look at locations etc, we can keep everybody informed, so they can all meet up together. We are encouraging people to join our new forum on the website, so they can make friends not just about the programme, but about all aspects of Whitby and the surrounding areas.

So as you can see we are going to encompass as much as we can of this fine programme, which I’m sure is going to go on being one of those timeless classics on television.

In my next article about The Whitby Website, I will discuss another aspect we’re going to try to develop, which is the history of the old town.

Obviously most people realise that one of the biggest attractions in the area is Whitby Abbey, at the top of the 199 steps with its fine view over the harbour. We are currently getting together some, then and now pictures, and will be writing articles about how Whitby is transformed from a working fishing town, to one of the major tourist attractions in the United Kingdom.

Whitby’s Swing Bridge 100 Year Centenary Celebrations

I was lucky enough to be able to watch Whitby’s swing Bridge 100 centenary celebrations on Saturday, 8 August 2009 from a prime location the second floor of the Dolphin Hotel which is right next to the bridge itself. I don’t think it would have been possible to have a better view on this gorgeous sunny day.

It was a very popular event and literally thousands of people turned up to watch the various celebrations.

Much of the credit for organising the event must go to John Freeman a local well-known artist with a gallery in the square.

The History of Whitbys Swing Bridge and its predecessors

At the entrance to the bridge during the afternoon Susan Harty pictured left (who regularly writes articles about forthcoming events in Whitby to inform tourists) was selling an excellent booklet called The History of Whitby Swing Bridge And Its Predecessors. It had been written by John Freeman in a short space of time so it would be ready for the big day itself, with some great articles and pictures.

If you’re interested in the history of Whitby I would highly recommend trying to find a copy. There was also a 100 year certificate on sale.

There was a PA system next to the bridge which produced an entertaining commentary throughout the afternoon’s events from local Whitby man I’m afraid I didn’t catch the details of who he was but he certainly kept everybody informed and entertained with some corny jokes.
Various entertainment started at 12:30 PM giving your day I carnival style feel. The entertainment was provided by the Cleveland Police band, Stakesby Steel band, Whitby Jets juvenile jazz band, and playlets by youngsters from the The Paul Nicholas School of Acting, Marske Fishermans Choir sang and the Saltburn Victorian Society dressed up for the day to bring a touch of period drama to the festivities.

Also a spectacular stunt as the famous Red Arrows flew under Whitby Bridge in formation….. OK I’m fibbing with the last one obviously just a teeny weenie bit impossible Actually the Red Arrows are scheduled to make an appearance Whitby Regatta this year, and if you’ve not seen them before they are certainly worth a viewing especially with the gorgeous backdrop of Whitby.
There were many people from the Saltburn Victorian Society dressed up to the nines making the event extremely atmospheric and giving you some idea of what the original opening ceremony could have been like in 1909.
As the time approached 4 PM the main events of the day were to unfold. Rev Canon David Smith blessed the bridge as there was a sail through by various boats including the current Whitby lifeboat and the 1938 Whitby lifeboat Mary Ann Hepworth which is now used as a pleasure trip vessel by a gentleman called Barry who I believe is a former Whitby lifeboat member.

Next a group of dignitaries gathered on both sides of the bridge to officially unveil the specially-commissioned plaques marking the anniversary.
Then on the west side, Whitby town mayor Coun Terry Jennison cut the ribbon to reveal the plaque, while on the east side, Scarborough Borough Council mayor Coun Bill Chatt did the honours.

They then led their groups, including many in historic costumes, to meet in the centre of the bridge, recreating a famous image from the opening 100 years ago.

In the meantime, huge crowds waited patiently on both sides for the bridge to re-open before the gates were finally unlocked and the massed throngs poured onto the bridge from both sides.

Whitby Museum is an independent volunteer Museum operated by Whitby Literary & Philosophical Society, which was founded in 1823. It contains the most varied set of collections of any Museum in NE Yorkshire and is a ‘Museum within a Museum’ with its distinctive Edwardian / Victorian ambience.

Collections include spectacular fossil marine reptiles, jet, Capt. James Cook and William Scoresby (whaling & scientific instruments) exhibits, many model ships, natural history, archaeology, bygones, costumes, toys and dolls, ethnography, samplers, ceramics, militaria, coins and medals, as well as the famed ‘Hand of Glory’ and much more.
