Whitby Abbey
Whitby Abbey is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Great Britain.
It is a dominant feature of Whitby with its gothic ruin overlooking the town from the East Cliff.
The ruin is a reminder of the early church’s power and dedication it is one of Britain’s best loved attractions offering inspiration to thousands of visitors each and every year.
Founded in 657AD by Oswy, Whitby Abbey is dedicated to St Hilda, after the first Abbess, Lady Hilda. Famous and first known poet, Cædmon, was attached to Whitby Abbey during the abbacy of St Hilda.
Climb the 199 steps to the abbey to enjoy views of the unspoilt beauty of Whitby Harbour, the Esk Valley and the glorious Yorkshire coastline.
