Steam railway bridge 30 opens
THE first passengers have travelled over the new Bridge 30 following a huge fund-raising appeal on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR).
Time had taken its toll on the 145-year-old wrought iron structure at Darnholm, between the two villages.
It was replaced over the winter in the biggest civil engineering operation in the railway’s history at a cost of £650,000.
All passengers of that first train on Saturday, the S15 with the GW Directors saloon coach, received a souvenir certificate.
A spokesman said: “It was a rare opportunity to go over the new Bridge 30 on the first day of opening, view the fantastic feat of engineering at first hand and see how people’s donations helped to save the NYMR.”
