Sainsbury store opening in Whitby?

Last week SAINSBURY’S the superstore has claimed that nearly all the people who attended the first stage of its public consultation were in favour of the new 30,000 sq ft store.

They are quick to point out that the proposed build in Stainsacre Lane would create 250 jobs in the town if it was given the go-ahead.

It claims over 200 local people and interested parties attended the consultation events, and of those who left feedback forms at the event, 97% were in favour of the plans.

Jo Try, regional development surveyor, for Sainsbury’s said: “We’re delighted that we received such overwhelming support for the proposals. Many people told us that they currently travel elsewhere, mainly to Scarborough, but some as go as far as York, to do their weekly food shopping.

“A store in Whitby would reduce the time and cost that local people currently incur travelling to other towns to do their weekly food shop.

“The number of miles driven every week by shoppers would also be dramatically reduced and benefit the environment.”

She added that many people expressed the need for a Sainsbury’s petrol station as part of the proposals.

Sainsbury’s said at the exhibition that, although at the moment the site was not large enough, Sainsbury’s is actively seeking a site close to the proposed store on which to have a petrol station.

Miss Try continued: “The consultation does not end at the public exhibition.

“We still want to know what the local community think of the store proposals and I would encourage people to give us their views.”
