Whitby Bridge 1871

I hope you agree this is an absolutely fantastic glass negative picture in1871, from the River Esk bank looking towards the old Whitby Bridge which was re-placed at the present one in 1909.

Amazing clarity in this old rare and special old picture showing the little cottages which are still there on the right-hand side of their washing out. This really does look amazing on box canvas and would make that extra special gift that cannot be bought anywhere else but here.

John Trueman was born in Bradford West Yorkshire in 1948. Specialising in paintings on the north coast of England for the last 45 years, he attended Cottingly Manor School & from there proceeded to the Regional Collage of Art, overlapping a period with the famous David Hockney.

His palette knife paintings have been sold Internationally. His first painting ever exhibited in the spring exhibition at Cartwright Hall , sold within the first hour! As did his Father’s in the same exhibition 50years previous.

Victorian picture of the east side of Whitby

Taken over one hundred years ago this is a picture of the east side of Whitby with St Marys church and Whitby Abbey on the sky line. If you look closely you can see a group of ragamuffin children on the viewing platform area watching the photographer. All those cottages would have been occupied by local fisher men rather the posh holiday cottages they are today.

Whitby is voted the Best Seaside Resort 2006

Whitby did has received the wonderful accolade of being considered the best seaside resort according the top consumer magazine, Holiday Which? Magazine 2006

The town was voted top ahead of other resorts like Tenby, Frinton-on-Sea and St Ives. Scarborough was not in the top ten.

Lorna Cowen, editor of Holiday Which? said British resorts had improved but not everywhere. He said: “For every resort riding a wave of renewal, with funky bars, trendy restaurants and boutique hotels, there’s another stuck in the doldrums of ageing infrastructure, tacky amusements and uninspiring Bed & Breakfasts.”

Because of the accolade Whitby was featured very heavily in various national press papers, with the Telegraph, Times and Daily Mail all running stories while GMTV presented the weather forecast from the town on Wednesday.

But the news Whitby is the country’s best resort came as no surprise to many.Dick Brew, chairman of Whitby Hospitality Association, said: “What a fantastic accolade for the town, especially from such a prestigious body as the Holiday Which? Guide.

“It is hoped that this well-deserved award will now spur both the borough and county councils to allocate realistic funding to the town, in order that the perennial problems of under-resourced maintenance of public facilities and traffic management, can be properly resolved.”

Even Scarborough Council’s tourism boss acknowledged Whitby is the best.
David Jeffels, the portfolio holder for tourism and leisure, said: “I’m absolutely delighted, it’s a well-deserved award and accolade and I’m sure the investment we’ve put into Whitby in recent years, which Scarborough Council is pleased to have been one of the instigators of, has paid off”.

“Whitby is the best seaside resort.”

Visitors to the town on Wednesday also agreed that Whitby is the best.
The town is so different to its rivals like Scarborough and Bridlington, because of its small intimate size and its sense of history with Whitby Abbey staring down over the town at the top of its famous 199 steps.

There is been a number of new bars and eateries opened up in the town of recent times, so if you’re looking for the traditional seaside facilities you’ll find everything in Whitby and a bit more with his history and its famous associations with Captain Cook and Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

Whitby voted Best Seaside Resort 2011 and Winner of Britain in Bloom

The great news was the Whitby won a national award from Britain in Bloom beating all the other competitors and been awarded a gold medal from the Royal horticultural Society. A ceremony was conducted at St Andrews in Scotland and it was decided that Whitby in Bloom which had been working alongside other volunteer groups, and they had greatly impressed the judges of accommodation when they visited Whitby in August, even though on the day of the visit there was torrential rain.

Councillor David Jeffels, Of Scarborough Council was delighted with the award “The Whitby in Bloom group has earned their honours by putting in a tremendous amount of volunteer hours over the last year.

“This is not just a quick fix for one day when the judges visit, but the result of a year long programme of activities covering floral and environmental projects. Most importantly of all, the community has worked together to achieve this fantastic accolade which is richly deserved.”

Councillor Jeffels is delighted with this double success and said:

“This just shows that we have the best community’s right here on the East Coast. We have so much to offer and we can hold our own against any other coastal resort in the country.”
